Check out these four pancake recipes, would you try them?
If you are bored with your perfect pancake recipe, or any other easy pancake recipe for that matter, it’s time to shake things up a little bit.
Forget about standard batter and standard add-ins like chocolate or fruits, I am talking about weird stuff like blue majik, umami, charcoal, and well, blood. Yes, real blood pancakes for those who are really bold and creative in the kitchen.
#1 Blue Majik Pancakes
Go blue, not green. The new hot super-food is called Blue Majik and it has the most beautiful shade of blue you have ever seen. Behind the cool name is actually Spirulina, a blue-green colored alga which is known for its health properties. It is a full protein and very rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, niacin, iron, and B vitamins. Unlike Spirulina, Blue Majik’s health benefits have not been confirmed yet, but you can always use it for the shocking blue hue. Those who have tried it admit that it tastes a bit fishy, but when mixed with other ingredients, that taste is almost undetectable.
Prepare a frosting made with 1/4 cup nut butter, 4 tbsp. maple syrup, 1 tsp. vanilla bean, and 4 capsules Blue Majik. Place it on top of pancake muffins, made by pouring the batter into muffin tins for baking.
#2 Real Blood Pancakes
The supporters of cooking with blood claim that blood is the best natural thickening agent for any dish. In addition, animal blood is rich in vitamin D, protein, and iron. Another upside is that it adds extra wild flavor and texture to help you re-establish that lost connection with the primal that wells deep inside you.
If you have a strong stomach and decide to use this ingredient in pancakes, order it from your butcher in advance. You can choose pork’s, sheep’s, cow’s, or lamb’s blood provided it is fresh, i.e. not older than two days.
Blood pancakes are very popular in the Scandinavian countries. They are prepared like standard pancake recipes, only with whipped blood added to the batter. This will result in dark brown healthy flapjacks.
They should be tasty, but I do not dare to try them myself. If you make them, do write or leave a comment, I’d really like to hear about your experiences.
#3 Charcoal Pancakes
If you thought that blood was the weirdest thing you can add to your pancake recipes, think again. Powdered charcoal is the newest food trend, an ingredient that is believed to absorb toxins and heavy metals from the body.
The type of charcoal used for cooking is the activated charcoal from any kind of tree, obtained by high heat treatment. Asian countries mostly use bamboo charcoal for cooking, especially in sweet treats. If you fancy black pancakes, add two tablespoons of any type of activated charcoal into the batter. They certainly look unusual!
#4 Marmite Pancakes
Marmite or umami is a brown paste made from yeast extract. It has a very specific savory, salty intense flavor that adds a special tone to various dishes, from sauces and glazes to gravies.
It is usually added to savory dishes, but it also works well in sweet treats like pancakes. I use it to create the best salty caramel sauce version and use it as a topping. Mix ½ cup of water, 1 ½ cup of caster sugar, 1 cup double cream and Marmite to taste.
Well, weirdos, choose your favorite and dive in!
