How to make a jewelry roll that’s perfect for traveling.

This easy do it yourself jewelry roll can be crafted in one hour or less. We are getting ready for our move to Belize and most of our belongings will go into a storage unit, including some of my favorite blue jewelry.

I really don’t see myself wearing a lot of jewelry while lounging at the beach or visiting different parts of this South American country. There are a few places to go in Placencia, Belize, where I might want to dress up a little bit. A large handmade fabric roll is perfect for storing jewelry, while a smaller version will be nice to hold a few select pieces while on the road.

A DIY jewelry roll can be made in any size.

For the past several years I stored my necklaces and hanging earrings on this mirror.

Mirror used as a Jewelry Holder

The curly thingies were perfect to hang my necklaces, I forgot to take a picture before I took all the jewelry off. You can see the mirror in the background of one of the pictures during a weekend bedroom redo.

After a while hanging my jewelry on the mirror got to be a mess. The earrings got caught up in the necklaces and it just looked awful. I never did hang the mirror up in our new house.

I didn’t want a jewelry box, so I decided to make a jewelry roll.

The jewelry roll pictured in this DIY article ended up being a little bit too heavy and bulky since I added all of my priceless custom jewelry, lol. I will make a smaller version to use as a travel jewelry case later on.

This easy DIY jewelry roll project took less than 1 hour from start to finish.

The supplies needed to make a No Sew Jewelry Roll:

  • A heavy duty sample fabric piece or a fabric place mat
  • A piece of contrasting fabric for the pocket
  • Ribbons in different sizes and colors
  • No Drip Hot Glue Gun
  • A Strip of Velcro for the pocket

I was lucky enough to have this nice piece of sample fabric with the edges all nicely surged in my sewing box. You can find sample pieces like this at your local fabric store.

Like I mentioned above, you could also use a fabric place mat or a piece of fabric in any size you desire. Just make sure that the edges are surged, sewn or glued with a 1 inch wide ribbon so it doesn’t unravel on you.

Measure and cut a piece of wide 1 inch ribbon to cover the top edge of your fabric.

Cut several thin ribbon pieces to hold your necklaces in place. Fold the pieces in half and use your no drip hot gun to glue the ribbons to the underside of the wide 1 inch ribbon.

Glue the wide ribbon with the thin ribbons attached to your base fabric of the jewelry roll.

Next, take the same wide ribbon measure and cut it to half the width of the fabric.

Fold over the ends and hot glue the ribbons to the fabric. Lay down a strip of glue in the center or break down the ribbons in thirds to make it more secure.

Use thin ribbon pieces or thick string to attach your dangling earrings to the jewelry roll.

Create a pocket for your DIY jewelry roll

Use your contrasting fabric to create a pocket to hold bracelets and other small jewelry items. Start by folding the fabric in thirds, you can play around with it until its the size you like it. Apply hot glue to the three outer edges of the underside of the pocket and adhere it to your base fabric, don’t glue the top edge.

Take the same wide 3 inch satin ribbon as before and add a strip to the three sides of the outside of the pocket, be sure to catch the base fabric. Add a strip of the 1 inch wide binding ribbon to the top side of the pocket flap.

Take a strip of Velcro and hot glue one part to the inside of the flap and the other part to the outside of the pocket. Add your jewelry!

Use a long piece of satiny ribbon to tie around your jewelry roll.

I love the 3 inch bright red satin ribbon, it looks lovely and keeps the jewelry snug and secure. As you can see in the picture above, my Jewelry Roll turned out a little bit bulky.  That’s alright by me since the whole thing is going into storage for now.

Depending on how many pieces you have and how heavy your jewelry is, you can also use thinner fabric and make a smaller version of this jewelry roll to use as a handy travel case.

Don’t you think this DIY jewelry roll would make a nice gift?

Add a nice piece of hand made or custom jewelry and you will have a gift any girl will love!

  1. HELLO AGAIN! LOVE THIS IDEA! I HAVE A SISTER IN LAW THAT I’D LOVE TO MAKE THIS FOR. SHE’S A FLIGHT ATTENDANT AND IS ALWAYS COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW SHE CAN TAKE HER JEWELRY WITH HER WITH GETTING IT ALL TANGLED. ONCE THE JEWELRY ROLL IS CLOSED, THE JEWELRY WON’T GET ALL TANGLED UP TOGETHER? THANK-YOU!!! :)

    1. Hi Cheryl, welcome back :) Yes, this is a great way to bring jewelry while traveling without getting it tangled up. The jewelry roll I made for this article is a little bit large for short trips, I used a piece of fabric about the size of a place-mat. I think half that size would be perfect to hold enough jewelry for several days and wouldn’t take up a lot of space in her flight bag.
