Thin ice on Minnesota lakes

It is the middle of January and at this time of the year Minnesota fishermen and women are usually found out on one of our 10,000 lakes trying to catch walleyes or sunnies. From a distance some lakes look like dislocated cities, as any size and shape of fish house can be found. From the tiny one man pop up to elaborate fishing castles.

thin ice on lake latoka, mnThis year however, the lakes have barely frozen over with many open spots visible even from shore. We have heard of numerous fish houses and vehicles breaking through the ice, luckily nobody has been hurt. Why anyone would drive on a lake when the temperatures have been barely below freezing for more than a few days is beyond me, but old habits are hard to break, I guess.

Is this just another exceptionally warm winter or is this the beginning of the end of our weather pattern as we know it? Are you feeling the effects of this warming trend where you are? Leave your comments below.

The Steel Toe Brewery of St. Louis Park, Minnesota

My Dad, as a gift, gave me a magazine about home brewing your own beers. It seemed like a novel idea to open a micro-brewery but with the patience that it took to make the final product it was easy to shelf the whole idea. But for the owners of the Steel Toe Brewery, Jason and Hannah, the dream became a passion. Not just to own a brewery but to generate a well crafted beer.

The fermentation of this idea came with Jason working with different brews right in their home.  Taking it to the next level he headed off to World Brewing Academy for 3 months of schooling. After graduation he landed a job with the Pelican Pub and Brewery in Oregon as a Cellarman and working up to Head Brewer. Bringing their experience and well thought Continue reading

Happy Boxing Day!

A little history lesson on ‘Boxing Day’.

‘Boxing Day’ is usually celebrated the day following Christmas which is December 26th. If Christmas falls on a weekend then the Holiday falls on Monday.  The name itself derives from the act of opening Christmas boxes that contained items for the poor. The Christmas box was traditionally made of wood or clay and usually placed within a church so the parishioners could leave gifts for the poor. The box was opened the day after Christmas hence Continue reading

Is the US Postal Service doomed to fail?

The ability for established systems to survive and remain relevant in a technologically changing world seems to be a greater challenge. One of the biggest changes that I have witnessed personally is the printing industry.  The ‘prep department’ of 20 years ago looks nothing like the one you’ll find today making my education in the field obsolete and antiquated. This would hardly be an issue if I had remained in the profession but life took me elsewhere.

The United States Postal Service is something that I believe we can all relate to and yet everyone seems totally oblivious to its rapid decline. The constant talk of shortening the delivery days and closing offices hardly registers with anyone anymore. How can we so readily dismiss the service that is provided to us  six days a week? Public perception is everything.

While I was in our local post office last week to pick up a package, it became evident that something Continue reading

Thankful on Thanksgiving

If your traveling this time of year or just staying put you might find a quiet moment while putting together the ‘family’ meal or in-between stores for some quiet reflection. The holidays become a blur with all the activity that becomes involved with them that as you get older they seem to fly by faster each year. Maybe because we feel that they are sneaking by that we pay more attention to them and truly appreciate what it is that we have in our lives.

We all value the people and good fortunes that have been bestowed upon us and even if things seem like they couldn’t get any worse we are still able Continue reading

OMA Pizza on beautiful Bradenton Beach

When it comes to finding a place to eat while on vacation, don’t you rely heavily on personal references?

If you find a local that’s lived in the area and has a grasp of the ‘lay of the land’, don’t you feel inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt? With this practice in mind we we’re directed to OMA’s Pizza and Italian Restaurant.

778-0771 or 778-0772

OMA Pizza is located in the scenic town of Bradenton Beach, Florida. Since Silke hasn’t had an authentic Italian pizza in years and I have never had one, we decided to give it a try.

While driving through the area we spotted and recognized the sign. It’s a cozy little place with booths and hand drawn murals on the walls that add to the authentic Italian feel. We ordered our usual Continue reading

Longboat Key

Longboat Key lies just outside Sarasota, Florida and has the spectacular Gulf of Mexico as a back drop. Silke and I have made our way here to visit the ‘Turtle Crawl Inn Resort’. Minnesota hasn’t had any snow yet but the thought of heading down to Florida for a week was an offer too good to pass.

Here is an excerpt from the Inn:

With a wide variety of unit styles and floor plans to choose from, no longer does direct Gulf front mean sacrificing your entire vacation budget. Is the Keurig still hot this Christmas?

You’ve seen the Keurig Single-Cup Home Brewing System at department stores and you might have even received coupons for the K-cups. Last Christmas season’s hottest item, Keurig coffee makers went off the shelves like hot cakes.

The concept seems pretty straight forward; an individual sized serving of coffee based on your own personal preferences for flavor. With so many varieties and flavors of coffee it might even seem a little overwhelming to the average coffee consumer to figure out where to start when purchasing the little K-cups, much less the machine itself.

The concept, no matter how novel the idea, is really a brilliant marketing strategy in disguise. Like the old laser jet printers they used to sell for next to nothing only to turn around and charge an arm and a leg for the cartridges, the Keurig Home Brewing System falls right in line. Imagine shelling out $51.25 for a 60 count variety K-cup pack. Then you’ll need the $23.00 holder, called a K-cup carousel tower, because you can’t just throw these in a drawer and expect you’re guests or yourself for that matter to sort them out.

Now that I have the downside to this contraption out of the way; Why do I still stop in the department stores and linger over this thing? What inner turmoil is going on inside my head that I can’t let this crazy device go? I’ve gone so far as to imagine Continue reading
